홀트가족 여러분께 드립니다

미국에서 네명의 소중한 한국 아이들과 어머니의 끔찍한 죽음으로 인한 고통을 표현할 수 있는 적절한 단어를 찾을 수가 없습니다.

현재 우리가 알기로는 아버지의 손에 의해 그들의 생명이 빼앗겼다는 것뿐 입니다. 또한 아버지는 분명 정신적으로 문제가 있었을 것입니다.
그러나 이러한 점이 한국과 미국에 있는 사람들이 겪는 엄청난 슬픔을 감소 시키지 못한다는 것을 잘 알고 있습니다. 우리처럼 우리의 삶을 입양 가족에게 아이들을 보내는 일로 헌신하는 사람들에게 우리가 하는 일이 과연 옳은 일인가에 대한 질문을 하지 않을 수 없게 합니다. 여러분 모두 이 중요한 질문을 다 할 것이라고 저는 상상해 봅니다.

거의 30년간 제가 한국을 여행하면서 여러분들이 친가족, 위탁가정, 양부모 가족과 아름다운 아이들을 위해 최선을 다해 헌신하는 모습을 보았습니다.

그리고 아이들이 행복하고 건강하고 한국인인 것을 자랑스럽게 생각하면서 성장하는 것을 지켜보는 것은 저에게 큰 기쁨이었습니다. 지난 수십년간 입양인들의 대학 졸업식, 결혼식, 부모가 되는 순간에 초대를 받았습니다.
또한 많은 입양인들이 다시 자녀를 입양하고 있습니다. 그 이유는 자신들의 소중한 경험을 다시 아들과 딸에게 자신들의 부모가 한 것처럼 다시 물려주기 위해서입니다.

이번 네 명의 죄 없는 아이들을 잃어버린 것에 대한 엄청난 슬픔으로 인해 여러분이 입양을 도왔던 대부분의 아이들이 잘 살고 있고 성공적인 삶을 살고 있다는 것을 의심하지 않았으면 좋겠습니다.

저희 양부모님들도 우리 아이들을 한국 양부모님들이 그러는 것 같이 아주 사랑하고 있습니다. 모든 아이들은 사랑이 넘치는 가정에서 성장할 권리가 있고 우리 모두 힘을 모아 많은 어린이들이 가정에서 성장할 수 있도록 함께 돕는 일의 가치에 대해 더 이상 의심하지 않았으면 좋겠습니다. 여러분의 일에 대해 자랑스러워하시고 여러분이 이루신 일에 대해 성취감을 느끼시기 바랍니다. 왜냐하면 여러분들의 일을 통해 많은 사람들의 삶에 커다란 기쁨을 안겨주기 때문입니다.

저의 마음은 여러분과 함께 있습니다. 만약 제가 여러분 옆에 앉아 있다면 함께 기도하겠습니다. 몇 주 뒤에 한국에서 다시 홀트 식구 여러분들을 뵙게 되기를 고대하고 있습니다.

To my Friends and Colleagues at Holt Children’s Services,

There are no words that adequately describe how pained we are over the tragic deaths of four precious Korean children along with their adoptive mom here in the U.S.
As we now know,  their lives were taken away at the hand of their father.  Although this man must have been mentally ill,  that does not lessen the enormous grief felt by people in Korea as well as those in the United States. For those of us who have dedicated our lives to helping children be adopted by loving parents,  we cannot help but question whether the work we do is the right thing. I can imagine that every one of you may be asking this important question.

For almost thirty years I have been traveling to Korea and seen the dedication of all of you who work with birth parents,  foster parents, adoptive parents and beautiful children.  I have also had the great pleasure of watching many of these children grow up into happy,  healthy and good people who are proud of their Korean heritage as well as having pride in being American. Over the years I have been to the homes of many of our families and even had the joy of seeing many of them graduate from college,  get married,  and become loving parents. Many of our adoptees have even adopted children of their own because they want to have the wonderful experience of bringing a son or daughter into their life in the same way that their own parents did.

At this enormous time of sadness over the loss of these four innocent children,  I hope you will not doubt that the vast majority of children you have helped to be adopted overseas are thriving well and leading successful lives. Our parents adore their children in the same way that Korean parents do.  Let us not doubt this certainty –  every child deserves a loving family and we have all worked together to make this happen for thousands of children.  Please be proud of your work and your accomplishments because you have brought enormous joy to so many lives. 

My heart is with you  –  as if I were sitting with you now in thought and prayer.  I look forward to seeing you in a few weeks when I return to Korea and reconnect with my dear friends and colleagues at Holt Children’s Services.
